The Bottom Line
As every good
accountant knows, even the cleverest manipulator of facts and figures is subject
to rules.
If his books are audited, the test will lie in whether or not
his numbers add up, not how neatly he penciled in his figures or how creatively
he arranged his columns of accounts.
There is a bottom line.
Does it all add up?
Do the books make sense when subjected to an audit?
What is the
bottom line of law?
If we were to audit our legal system, would the books make
sense?
What tools would we use to audit our system of law and
order?
How would we judge if our laws are good or bad?
How do we judge constitutions, statutes, and rules of court?
Is there a bottom line?
Should man's laws
have a "higher law" they must obey?
This question is perhaps the most compelling of all, for by
our answer we either reach a place of agreement or separate ourselves into
warring factions unable to secure peace for our posterity nor justice for
ourselves.
Either man's laws are subject to a higher law or man is free
to choose.
Either there are consequences to our ignorance or there are
not.
Many refuse to
answer this question. Some are violent in their opposition to the truth this
question calls for. Yet, whether we answer or angrily refuse to answer, the
consequence of our response has repercussions for all humanity ... and most
especially for our children.
Is there a higher law?
The framers of
our Constitution agreed with the principles set forth in our Declaration of
Independence, that there is one law-giver, our Creator whose eternal decrees
control creation ... a Law above all laws, a law some call "Mother Nature" or
"Providence" or "Kharma" or simply "The Way Things Are". You can argue with it,
however you cannot avoid it. The Law above all laws is in control and determines
our destinies ... both men and nations ... according to the decisions we make
today and our actions that follow those decisions. Call this Law "God" or
"Allah" or whatever you choose, it is not subject to debate. There is a pattern
to the universe by which foreseeable consequences follow what we say and do. The
early greeks called it logos ... the Law we cannot change.
This fact is not subject to conjecture.
It is a documented reality.
The Constitution was written to provide legal structure for a
nation that had already declared its independence in a document recognizing this
Higher Law, our
Creator, the Spirit of Life that gives life and takes it away again, and the
founders of our nation established our system of laws with the recognition of
the Higher Law that created us and gave each of us the right to live in liberty
with happiness.
This is the bedrock on which your freedoms stand ... or fall!
The men who gave birth to the system of law we call America
agreed with the proposition that all of us are created beings, each endowed with
certain rights by the Creator Logos ... rights that came to us at the moment of our creation, not
rights created by man's enactment of constitutions, statutes, rules, or
ordinances.
The constitutions and statutes of men merely provide a
mechanism whereby good people attempt to secure for others the rights our
Creator has already conferred upon us all. These important documents do not
create our rights. They merely recognize them and form a covenant between our
government and us that those rights will be protected ... for each and every one
of us. To uphold such a government and improve upon it is our highest service to
each other. It is one of the ways we can love our neighbors as ourselves. By
enacting and enforcing good laws that protect the God-given rights of others, we
give meaning to the Golden Rule ... the Rule of Rules ... doing for others what
we wish others would do for us.
To deny this truth is to declare oneself a traitor to liberty
and an enemy of all that justice stands for.
Yet, many today
despise the very notion of creation. They have no god but their own selfish
desires. Some go so far as to insist that they created themselves, choosing
their own parents, deciding when they would be born!
Such persons submit to no law.
They obey only the law of their own selfish will, seeking
gain at the expense of others.
All this, of course, is contrary to the principles set forth
in our Declaration of Independence, for these people seek to use the power of
money and public influence to reap gains for themselves by unjustly tipping the
balance against others.
Their battle cry is, "There is no God but man!"
Beware of these people.
The fact that we
are created beings endowed with certain rights by our Creator is as much a part
of our legal heritage as our Bill of Rights.
Make no mistake about this.
God and the principles of American liberty and justice are
inseparable.
You cannot have liberty and justice without God.
This is not to
espouse a particular doctrine or religion. Far from it. Each is free to choose
how (or whether) he or she will acknowledge God. That is one of your God-given
rights. You have the right to be wrong.
Good government does not impose "religious"
teachings on its people.
Good government does not proclaim that God is white or black,
male or female, Protestant, Catholic, Jew, or other.
Good government does, however, proclaim that God is truth.
Good government also proclaims that God is love.
Here is the
higher law.
To imagine good
government without defining God as truth and love is to imagine the impossible,
for without truth and love there can be nothing good.
Therefore, the
founders of this great nation embarked on what William Penn called The Holy
Experiment ... a new nation conceived and dedicated to the principle that God in
fact rewards good, punishes evil, and triumphs through the power of truth in
words.
The law is words.
Some words are true. Some are not.
For example, consider the statement, "A thing similar is
not exactly the same." Can you argue with this? Can anyone but a completely
deranged individual argue with such a statement? Of course not. The statement is
true. It is unequivocally true. It cannot be false. A thing similar cannot be
exactly the same. These words are true.
Now consider the statement, "This sentence is
false." Such arrangements of words can be neither true nor false. The
statement is designed to have no discernible meaning. The sentence contains a
logical leak. The thought lacks integrity. The words are at war with each other.
When we enact
laws that are contrary to our Creator's higher law that gives to each an equal
portion, rewarding truth, promoting love, then our laws are at war with each
other ... and the people suffer.
Only when our written laws are subject to the higher law
ordained by our Creator, the law that ultimately prevails in our human affairs
(whether we choose to recognize its immutable truth or not) we are at war with
ourselves, tearing away at the very fabric of reason, eroding the hopes of our
children, and creating a world wherein the rich and powerful plunder the poverty
stricken and weak among us. Such nations are morally bankrupt and, in time,
destroy themselves from within.
Our future can be
unimaginably bright.
The promise of tomorrow can offer glorious hope to many
generations yet to be born.
The question remains, however, "Will our laws be subject
to God's higher law, or will we insist on being gods unto ourselves?"
Will we ignore the wisdom of our founding fathers and embrace
atheism as our state religion, attempting to live by laws that have no higher
principles, or will we return to the faith of our fathers made wise by
experience that has demonstrated time and again that good is its own reward and
truth always wins in the long run?
Now as never
before in our history we have an opportunity to restore the foundations of
liberty and rebuild a system of human justice based on the reality of truth and
our shared trust in God's love for us all.
Never before has it been more important for people to learn
the rules.
Never before has it been more important to teach the rules to
others.
Hold fast
together, for together we can make this world a better place!
Let our nation
trust in God once more.
Let our God be love and truth forever.
Stand up for
what's right, America!
Learn the rules for yourselves.
Teach your children truth.
